Mexico's Economic Outlook Q2 2026: Growth and Opportunities

According to Comunicado No. 64 from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), issued on July 30, 2026, the Mexican economy demonstrated solid dynamism during the second quarter of 2026. This report offers key insights for businesses and investors regarding the country's current economic state and outlook.

Solid Economic and Labor Market Performance

Mexico's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 1.5% compared to the previous quarter, marking its largest advance since the fourth quarter of 2020. This growth was generalized across major activity sectors, driven by the recovery of primary activities, the dynamism of manufacturing and construction in industry, and favorable performance in services. Domestic demand was a fundamental driver, with an advance in private consumption and a significant 4% increase in gross fixed capital formation, reflecting a favorable environment for investment.

The labor market also maintained its strength, with an increase of 353 thousand employed persons and an unemployment rate near historical lows (2.7%). Real wages continued their growth trend, suggesting increased purchasing power and a boost to domestic consumption.

Healthy Public Finances and Increased Tax Collection

Public finances closed the first half with better-than-expected fiscal balances, in line with fiscal discipline objectives. Tax collection showed remarkable dynamism, supported by strong domestic consumption and actions to strengthen tax and customs control. Notably, there was a real annual growth of 10.6% in VAT income, the highest for a first half since 2014, as well as increases in non-fuel IEPS and taxes associated with imports. For our firm's clients, this data underscores the importance of maintaining a robust tax compliance strategy in an environment of more efficient collection.

Favorable Environment for Investment and Foreign Trade

The SHCP report also highlights a positive environment for investment and international trade. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) reached a new historical high in the first quarter, registering 23.6 billion dollars, an increase of 10.4% compared to the same period in 2025. This investment flow, along with an external sector that maintained positive performance thanks to productive integration with North America, presents significant opportunities for companies with an international focus and those looking to expand their operations.

The financial system maintained its stability, with high capitalization levels. Furthermore, the Mexican peso appreciated by 2.6% against the dollar by the end of June, and the Bank of Mexico reduced the reference rate by 25 basis points, factors that can influence financing decisions and the profitability of business operations with international components.
